Web competition 2007
From TheStudentWiki
This competition is being organised by Innovation North, Leeds Metropolitan University and the West Yorkshire branch of the British Computer Society as part of the celebrations of the University's centenary and the Society's golden jubilee. This competition will give students the opportunity to build up a Web 2.0 website and exploit the sorts of facilities they are used to on social computing sites such as wikipedia, MySpace and YouTube. After the competition, the school or college will be left with a private wiki website which can be used for other purposes by the institution.

Outline
The theme of the competition is Why technology matters.
We will set up a wiki for each entrant school or college (using the same software as wikipedia [1]). Your challenge is to add small articles, photos, sound files, etc that illustrate the impotrance of technological advances and why IT and computing skills are important. We don't really want a series of essays on the topic. We are looking for you to be creative and use the facilities provided by the wiki to illustrate why you feel IT skills are still needed in society.
Most Year 11-13 students will be familiar with social computing sites such as YouTube, MySpace and Wikipedia. Here is your change to build a website that will have similar facilities.
We hope the competition will give students and their schools or colleges the chance to:
- experience the benefits that are offered by a collaborative website in comparison with a standard one
- learn some new skills
- have some fun as you put together the site using some of the building blocks familiar to users of social computing sites such as YouTube, MySpace and, of course, Wikipedia.
- establish a wiki that can be used for other purposes by your school or college once the competition has finished
Rules
1. The competition is open to students in years 11-13 attending schools and further education colleges in the Yorkshire and Humber region. It is also open to all further education colleges in the Leeds Metropolitan University regional university network. Each institution may submit upto 3 teams.
2. This is a team competition, individual entries will not be accepted. Teams of approximately 4 students are expected to populate their school's wiki with material that explains the importance of technological innovation to society, businesses and individuals. The team are responsible for putting the site together and representing it in the competition. A wiki is collaborative and you might encourage others in your school to add to your material.
3. All competing teams must use the wiki that has been set up for the purpose of the competition.
4. All teams must be sponsored by a member of staff. This person will be the sole contact with the organisers. However, we will issue podcasts throughout the competion to pass tips and information directly to the team members.
5. Your finished website will be judged at the showcase event. Your team will need to be available to demonstrate aspects of the site to judges at the showcase. You should be prepared to say how you have used the wiki to collaborate with each other on the project.
6. The website must be the work of the entrants. Staff and parents may offer guidance, but the students must have undertaken the website development.
7. No images of people aged under 18 may be stored on your site. You also must not store any other material that can be used to identify under 18s - this includes names and addresses. Failure to comply with this rule will lead to disqualification from the competition.
7. We want you to have fun and enjoy putting your site together. We hope that enjoyment and pleasure of computing and IT will come through in your submitted website.
