Uni Essentials
From TheStudentWiki
From the perspective of a new student at Leeds Metropolitan University here is a list of things not to come to uni without! Some of these are obvious, but some are surprisingly handy!
Very Important
These are the bare essentials:
George Foreman Grill - These are a must have bit of kit, it cooks almost anything (bacon, chicken, grill steaks, BBQ food, etc..) quickly, healthily, and easily. One thing to note though, make sure you keep it clean, or the non stick coating can start to come off.
Microwave - If your flat doesn't have one, make sure you get one between all of you, makes it quicker to cook microwave meal, as well as steam veg to keep up with the 5-a-day recommendations.
Very Useful
You can get by without these but even in the first 5 weeks of Uni life they make things a lot easier:
Bus pass - If your campus isn't within easy walking distance, and you need to get the bus, a bus pass is a good recommendation. As well as usually being cheaper, it also allows you to travel in more than usual at no extra cost, and means you don't have to hunt for an ATM after a night out to find money for the bus. Once you have the bus pass or ticket, Metro offer a bus timetabling service - simply text the number of the bus stop to 63876 (it spells METRO on the keypad!) and a few seconds later you have a text listing the times of the buses from that stop - simple. More details can be found here [1]
Internet connection - Even if your campus is just across the road, it is always useful to have an internet connection at your home, for those late night assignments you suddenly remember. It's worth bearing in mind that if you get a faster connection you can use such technologies as VOIP (Voice over IP) to keep in touch with your friends and family, usually for free, which is a big plus.
