Introduction

Set in one of the many basements in Leeds city centre, this intimate venue was once the central school of ballroom dancing. Today it is the home to the award winning HIFI Club. HIFI first opened its doors in October 2000 after being bought by three people, Ed Mason, John Morelli and Steven Allison (BBC Leeds, 2003). The successful independent club has just celebrated its seventh birthday. The HIFI Club was opened to offer the Leeds club scene something which was missing at the time. Club nights and live music based around jazz, funk, soul and hip hop. Now opening seven days a week and offering a variety of club, comedy and live music nights, HIFI continues to successfully draw in the crowds, reaching its 360 capacity most nights. (O‘Byrne, 2007)

The HIFI Club is the sister venue to others which are also located within Leeds. They are The Faversham,Wire and Arts Café Bar.

The venue consists of one room, one bar, a stage and comfortable seating with tables. The latter are able to be moved or removed if desired. The club doesn't have a specific outside smoking area other than the street, however the smoking ban and lack of built area has not affected business at The HIFI Club. For those who are smokers a 'Traffic Light' system is executed to limit the amount of people outside on the street at one time.

The main aim of the HIFI club is to "provide good quality nights and to create a welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere in which people can have fun." (O‘Byrne, 2007)
