Talk:Amber Cars

My friends and I were approached by an Amber Taxi driver on Saturday night/Sunday morning as we came out of The Grand Arcade on our way home.

We had been at mine and my friend's joint birthday party and we put all our birthday cards and presents in a plastic box in the boot. When we got out of the cab, he drove off with everything. He has not returned the items and Amber say they cannot help us as he picked us up illegally (we didn't pre-book). We didn't know this.

Beware of illegal taxis - we have been stung! And don't expect Amber or whoever, or the police to give you any help whatsoever.

:(

The page on Amber Cars mentions the differences between a 'Taxi' and a 'Private Hire'. It is something that the police cover at freshers' festival talks and so a good reason why students should attend these talks. They will tell you that when you are travelling in the 'illegal' taxi then you are not covered by its insurance if you have an accident and so you really are running a risk.

Make sure that you tell the Student Union about your experience. It won't help in your particular case, but if it happens to a number of students, and they report it, then it is more likely that something can be done. It is worth mentioning to the Police Student Liaison Officer and if something can be done then it will be.
