Student Safety
From TheStudentWiki
For many students coming to university is the first time that they have been away from home for any significant period of time and it brings with it many new responsibilities. Suddenly students are responsible for the security of their own belongings and personal safety, can come home at whatever time they feel appropriate and do not have their parents advising them about their behaviour.
Most colleges and universities work in partnership with the police and other emergency services to reduce the likelihood of students becoming victims of crime and/or having accidents. The police are a valuable source of information for students who may seek advice and information about crime, motoring offences, anti-social behaviour or how to be a good citizen. The fire service provide information on fire safety and attend university premises to talk to students and give demonstrations, e.g. how to put out chip pans fires (if preventing them fails!). They also attend university premises to put out fires, or respond to false alarms, but we would like to prevent them having to do so - so please behave sensibly.
By making the most of the information, and people who are available to them, students can prevent themselves, and their friends, inadvertently becoming victims or even offenders, and may even be able to find useful information and contacts to help them with their academic studies.
Information is available in the following areas:
The police forces of the UK have put together a website of Police Frequently Asked Questions. This helps to reduce the number of calls to them, as the public are able to search for the answer to popular questions. If you cannot find the answer to your question you can submit the question to them. If it is a good question it may get added to their database of questions.
Students on student safety
There are a number of students who have made podcasts to help other students. Details can be found on the Student Safety Podcasts page.
