Student Discounts

  • The good thing about being a student is that you can often get discounts from stores provided that you can prove your student status. Your student, or student union card can usually be used to prove that you are a student.
  • Beware of places that only offer discounts to full-time students - they don't understand the changing student population - argue your case - a student is a student. Know what your id card says about you - it probably won't show your mode of study.
  • If you are a mature student then stand your ground, don't let them disadvantage you because you are not a 'stereotypical' student. A NUS card will have more 'street cred' on discounts in shops that do not have a relationship with your university.

Software

  • See what you can get for free. Universities often have site licenses that allow software to be installed on student home PCs free of charge for the duration of your studies.
  • There is software available that can be used to track your PC if it is stolen and then connects to the internet. Police forces can often arrange for free, or heavily discounted, copies for students.
