Safe Nights Out

Drink Spiking

Drink spiking may be used to make the victim more vulnerable to theft or rape. This can happen to person of either sex.

The following advice will reduce your changes of becoming a victim:

  • Never accept a drink from someone you don't know
  • Use a specially adapted cover for your glass or bottle
  • Never leave your drink unattended
  • Plan your night out if you can
  • Appoint a drink watcher if you go to the toilet or off for a dance.
  • Remember alcohol affects your reactions - you'll be less alert
  • Don't feel that soft drinks don’t get spiked….....they can be!
  • If you think for one moment that your drink has been tampered with, don't take a chance. Get another one.
  • Remember - males also fall victim to this type of offence.

Looking After Each Other

When you go out with a group of friends, you all have joint responsibility to ensure eachothers’ safety and welfare.

  • If you split up with your group of friends, let them know what you are doing.
  • If you can’t find one of your friends, make every attempt to contact them.
  • Keep your mobile phone on in case someone is trying to contact you!

Getting Home Safely

Walk home in pairs or, better still, in groups

Stick to well lit areas, avoid dark parks

Sit downstairs on a bus, within shouting distance of the driver

Taxi’s (those vehicles displaying “taxi” on the roof) can pick you up anywhere

Private Hire Vehicles (those with “private hire” signage on the side of the vehicle) muse be pre-booked, otherwise their insurance is invalid for the duration of the journey

When using private hire vehicles, ask the driver who they have come to collect, don’t offer your name. If you ask them if they are to collect you, they will say “yes” to get the fare but the insurance will be invalid if they are not telling you the truth.
