Rape/Sexual assault
From TheStudentWiki
If you are the victim of a sexual assault, including rape, the circumstances will dictate whether you ring 999 or 0845 6060606. If you feel you are still in any danger when you are able to make the call, ring 999.
- Tell the operator where you are and where a police officer can visit you
- Try to remember exactly what has happened and where, in detail;
- If the offender is not known to you, try to picture him/her. The officer will ask you for details including:
- Gender
- Skin colour
- Height
- Build
- Hair colour and style
- Clothing, including footwear
It helps if you can write notes of the event and description of the offender. The officer may take these notes from you to use as evidence if the offender is identified and taken to court. Depending on the nature of the offence and the circumstances, you may be asked to provide a written statement. This will involve you relaying the circumstances in as much detail as possible to the officer who will write down what you say and ask you to sign the statement forms.
In addition, you will need to be aware of the following:
- Do not change your clothes or have a bath or shower before the officer arrives as you may destroy vital evidence
- The officer may take you to a police station where you will be examined by a specially trained doctor
- After the examination you will be able to change your clothes, so be ready to take spare clothes with you
- Some or all of your clothes, including possibly footwear, may be taken from you by the officer to be used as evidence should the offender be traced or known to you, and the case proceed to court.
In the event of this course of action being necessary, you will be able to take a friend with you and the officer attending will be specially trained to help and support you through the process.
