Structural timelines
Timelines are useful devices for mapping out the structure of a piece. You can also fill in other information and make it as detailed as you wish adding different levels of information. This is an example of a structural timeline.
You can see that this example give Tempo/bpm and includes a variety of Structural information including names such as intro, verse, chorus, bridge, middle 8, episode, stop time, outro which are commonly used to indicate different musical sections in popular music. The timeline also uses letter names A B C D etc. to describe the relationship between the different sections.
In addition, in the lower part of the timeline, the Phrase structure and number of bars have been shown. This adds useful detail to the ‘map’ of a track and could be of use where a track changes meter or tempo.
Finally, on this example a number of other significant events have been shown including instrumentation. It would be possible to add production effects, dynamics, lyrics and any other feature that you felt was important to the structure of the piece.
