Introduction

With the help of Leeds Met's Chancellor Brendan Foster, The Great Student Run made its debut in Leeds on Sunday 30th April. It was unprecedented opportunity for Leeds Met to live its vision of enhancing the student experience through sporting, educational, cultural and social partnerships.

The Great Student Run is a pioneering mass participation event for students, staff and alumni nationally. It saw 1,200 participants from all over the UK taking part in the scenic 10k route starting at the Headingley Carnegie stadium, through the city centre and finishing with an "After Race" celebration in the beautiful grounds of the Leeds Met Headingley Campus.

Students made a significant contribution by engaging in the planning process, using the event to build student portfolios and volunteering to support the event on the day.

Strategically, the Great Student Run is well placed to become an annual sporting and cultural event for Leeds leading to a Great Student Weekend in the future, thereby raising the profile of and economic acitivity within Leeds as a city and Yorkshire as a region, all of which will no doubt help us prepare for the Olympics.
