2007 Event
The BCS University Challenge is a competition organised annually by the West Yorkshire Branch of the British Computer Society. Following the format of the television’s 'University Challenge' each year it is held at a different university in the region. This year's competition was hosted by Leeds Metropolitan University at its Carnegie Stand at Headingley Stadium on Wednesday 14th March. The event formed a part of the BCS' fiftieth anniversary celebrations as well as marking one hundred years of Leeds Metropolitan University in Headingley, and fifty years of computing in universities.
University teams from Hull, Teesside, Newcastle and Leeds Metropolitan competed in first round heats, with each team playing all the others. At the end of the heats, Hull were leading with six points, whilst Teesside and Newcastle held joint second place sharing the remaining six points.
In the first of the semi-finals, Teesside strode ahead, beating their Newcastle rivals by seventeen points to four. Hull played Leeds Met in the second semi-final and walked away with twenty one points to the host university team's one.
After strong performances from both Hull and Newcastle through the qualifying rounds, when the final came, there was no stopping Hull. In the end they were victorious with an emphatic scoreline of twenty six points to four.
